About Our Program
The “Family Self Sufficiency Program” is a HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development) sponsored program that is designed to assist highly
motivated low-income individuals in becoming independent and self-sufficient.
The program provides positive encouragement as well as a means of acquiring
marketable skills that will allow for better job opportunities. In doing this,
individuals and families can provide for themselves and their loved ones.
The FSS program is voluntary and you may join or quit the program at any time
without it affecting your Section 8. It is simple to join; all you have to do is
contact the Housing Authority to schedule an appointment. Take advantage of
this wonderful opportunity and begin your journey towards self sufficiency.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM?
To assist low-income individuals and families with obtaining the skills needed to
secure permanent quality employment.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
-Only Section 8 Participants
-Families or individuals with a sincere desire to improve their own lives and;
-Families or individuals who are committed to working towards self-reliance.
ESCROW ACCOUNT:
As always, once individuals and families receive better paying jobs their portion
of the rent will increase. Once the rent increases, the increase (due to increase
in wages) is matched by the Housing Authority and the match is placed into a
savings account on behalf of the family. The family gets the matched funds plus
interest after they have completed their contract of participation. There are,
however, no restrictions on what the money can be used for. It is left entirely
up to the discretion of the individual or family involved. The escrow account
offers a family or individual the opportunity to save for the future.
There have been several Family Self Sufficiency participants throughout the
United States that have used their escrow funds to:
Put a down payment on a home
Buy a new car
Pay off credit card debt
Attend college
Go on a shopping spree
Take a vacation
