Please join us in Thanking and Recognizing Katherine (Kat) Linder, our Housing Choice Voucher Program Director for her outstanding work with (Sec 8) Housing Choice Voucher Programs so far this year!

Kat is currently managing 200 vouchers for the Manhattan Housing Authority. She plays a critical part in providing support to applicants and landlords across the Manhattan area. Thanks to her hard work over the past year, MHA is preparing to issue 53 additional regular (HCV) Housing Choice Vouchers on top of any (ECV) Emergency Housing Choice Vouchers MHA receives from the passage of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Kat is pushing the Manhattan Housing Authority toward making history. For the first time, MHA is positioned to have completely worked through the Section 8 wait list of applicants. New applicants are coming in and we will again grow the wait list. This is an exciting time to be so well positioned to support the area housing needs going forward.

The (HCV) Housing Choice Voucher program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.

A family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit of the family's choice where the owner agrees to rent under the program. This unit may include the family's present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the PHA.

A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the PHA on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. Under certain circumstances, if authorized by the PHA, a family may use its voucher to purchase a modest home.

The housing voucher family must pay 30% of its monthly adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, and if the unit rent is greater than the payment standard the family is required to pay the additional amount.
