Brad Claussen


Mr. Claussen has been involved in public service for over thirty years, most of which were as an Inspector and Chief Building Official for the City of Manhattan, KS. He managed a division of 14 personnel involved in all aspects of building construction and housing inspection and retired as Assistant Chief with the Manhattan Fire Department in 2019.

In 2009, Mr. Claussen was awarded the Master Code Professional designation from the International Code Council. The International Code Council's Master Code Professional (MCP) designation is the highest level of ICC certification and is the "gold standard" for demonstrating proficiency in the construction code profession. The Council has certified thousands of individuals, but only a select number (approximately 800 worldwide) have attained this high-level of achievement. To become a Master Code Professional, a candidate must first earn eight core ICC certifications plus an additional number of elective ICC certifications. Typical Master Code Professionals hold 17 or more ICC certifications. To become a Master Code Professional, certified individuals must complete an additional 45 hours of Continuing Education Units every three years to maintain active status. 

He is also certified as a Building Official and as a Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Housing and Fire Code Inspector and Plans Examiner among 20 total certifications. He has attended courses at the University of Wisconsin, Central Michigan University and the University of Nebraska and has completed study at the Manhattan Area Technical College in First Responder. 

He is a professional member of The International Code Council, The International Conference of Electrical Inspectors and is a member and Past President of The Kansas Association of Code Enforcement. He is also a member of the Kansas Disaster Rapid Assessment team and has participated in post disaster assessment of damaged structures in several jurisdictions in Kansas.

Mr. Claussen has presented guest lectures for the College of Architecture and the College of Human Ecology at Kansas State University, The Manhattan Area Technical College Building Trades and HVAC programs and has instructed at the EPA Radon Resistant New Construction Workshop in Washington, D.C. Along with these, he has presented numerous topics for contractor continuing education as well as state level classes for the Kansas Code Enforcement Association.

He has been active in the betterment of his community for many years through volunteer and civic organization as a board member and president of the Manhattan Emergency Shelter Inc., board member and president of the Manhattan Optimist Club and president of the Manhattan High Booster Club. In addition, he was a volunteer youth sports coach in the community for many years.
